Power Generation Facility

The Power Generation Facility will be developed, owned, and operated by a third party and will use low-carbon clean syngas from the ISCG Facility to produce electricity. Synfuels will select their Power Generation Facility partner later in 2009.

The Power Generation Facility is a 300 MW combined cycle power generation facility using ISCG syngas as its primary fuel. The Power Generation Facility will be located near Whitecourt, Alberta and will tie into the existing 240 kV high voltage transmission system in the Whitecourt area.

The CO2 emissions intensity of the Power Generation Facility output is 25% of that of conventional subcritical pulverized coal plants and just over half that of natural gas combined cycle generation facilities currently operating in Alberta. If the Power Generation Facility were to displace a subcritical pulverized coal power plant of the same size currently in use in Alberta, the result would be a reduction in CO2 emissions of 2 million tonnes per year, along with major reductions in SOx, NOx and mercury emissions and greatly reduced freshwater usage.
